Well, this is my first of many TOS Crew Reviews! If you remember, I was chosen to be part of the 3rd journey of the TOS Crew, which has over 200 crew mates. We will be reviewing many things so be sure and check back - you never know if we'll find something out in the open seas that you might really need.
This first review was for the June 2010 Module of the 2009 Schoolhouse Planner. Each module is a stand alone unit study for all ages. It even has a special High School Expansion section that gives those older children a greater challenge. That way you can use this unit study with all your children! I know this is a big plus, especially for larger families.
My daughter was very excited that we would be learning about the continents. We have done several introductions to some of the continents, but it was nice to be able to learn about all of them at one time. At the beginning of the unit it discusses what geography is and what maps are. Each of the 7 continents were discussed and they gave some fun and important facts of each continent. There were even some links to fun games to help you keep reviewing the countries within a continent. Arianna told me that the games were her favorite part, but that she like learning about the continents too.
Since my children are all between the ages of 1 and 7, we did not use the activities in the high school section, but I can't wait until I can. I might even take some time in the coming weeks to complete this section on my own! I love learning new things and this section was packed with geography challenges. They also tied geography to history, literature and math. How fun!
We have not fully completed the lapbook portion of this unit due to some computer issues we have had, but plan on doing that this week. There are also coloring pages that both my daughters were able to enjoy. Since my youngest will only be entering K-5 we just stuck with the basics - the names of the continents, what their shapes are and that we live in North America.
Also included in this module is some copywork selections (manuscript and cursive), recipes, and other resources. Overall, we loved this module and I can't wait to be able to do it again as a review for my older ones and a fresh look for the younger ones.
Now for the information you have all been waiting for - the nitty gritty on all the specs and details:
