What are WE doing this year - elementary, middle, and high school - Back to School Blog Hop!

So today is all about curriculum on the Homeschool Review Crew Back to School Blog Hop. I would have to say our curriculum is changing a bit more then it has in the past years for several reasons. One we have an elementary student, a middle school student, and a HIGH SCHOOLER! So I've really had to have some one on one talks with our oldest to pin down what she'd like to accomplish and how.
Back to Homeschool Annual Blog Hop - 2017
I would have to say we are still sticking with a classical spine for everyone and then all of our children have chosen some things that they would like to give a shot ... basically specific languages they each want to learn ... so here's our plan ... I think.

~~~~~~~~~~
For my son, youngest, entering the 3rd grade:
     Bible - Our church has a really good children's curriculum called Orange, which I LOVE and support. So we will be keeping with the character trait they work on for the month and the memory verse (expanding it if needed). We will also be having our own family devotions. That will be left up more for my husband for he will lead most of those.
     Math - Life of Fred is our (and very much loved by my math loving hubby) main choice [for all kiddos]. Seanan is currently in Farming I think, but he's getting ready to go back to the beginning and re-do them all. This is exactly the way the author expected the elementary series to be used.
     English/Language Arts - We will be pressing on with First Language Lessons and with one of the reviews from this year Hewitt Homeschooling. We will also be finishing the Memoria Press' First Start Reading set. He was a little hesitant to really want to start reading, but these workbooks are exactly what got him hooked. So we will finish them so he gets a strong foundation.
     History - We will be using Story of the World (SOTW) mostly. We got a little behind last year, so we will be finishing Vol. 2 the Middle Ages and then moving on to Vol. 3 of Early Renaissance. We do this all together.
     Science - We will continue to use Science in the Ancient World by Dr. Jay Wile. We love this newer curriculum of his. And it can be used by all my kiddos.
     Languages - So this is really where my children are going in all different directions. Seanan REALLY wants to learn a specific Indian dialect called Telugu. This is the language a friend of ours is a native speaker. They live in Visakhapatnam and they come to America for a few months each year. Next year he wants to speak to our friend in Telugu. He might also end up trying to learn a little Hindi since that is also spoken in their province. I will be using an online website I found that actually has lessons in Telugu! We will also learning Latin using Prima Latina, another wonderful review we received this year.
~~~~~~~~~~
So next up is our middle school aged daughter:
     Bible - this will be the same for all three of our children.
     Math -  Audrie will also be using Life of Fred, but she is in book Jelly Bean. The goal is to finish through Minecraft (Kidney, Liver, and Minecraft are the Intermediate series) hopefully by January. She has already been through the elementary series at least 3 times.
      English/Language Arts - For Audrie we have decided to finish the Reader's in Residence which we got earlier this year as a review product. We will add to that Daily Grammar from Schoolhouse Teachers.
     History - Since we do History all together she will also be doing SOTW with her siblings. We will also be using another review product to help with some of the activities and bringing the Middle Ages more to life!
     Science - This is also the same as her siblings ... and one of the reasons we really enjoy the classical method. We can do it all together and we do it in cycles.
     Language - We have decided that the girls will be doing Latina Christiana 1 together, but Audrie wants to also learn a second language. Her choice is Chinese. I won't be that helpful with that, but since her father studied Chinese for 2 years in college and enjoys it he'll be the lead teacher for that. She will be using some Pimsleur CD's he had and then using his college textbooks as the 'go-by' for what to teach and when.

~~~~~~~~~~
Now it's time for our high school choices. Arianna has had more say this year then in year's past. More because we are switching up some things since she is young for a 9th grader. We'll see if it gets to hard for her and then either she'll be a 8th grade honor student or  it'll be as a 9th grader.
     Bible - this will be the same for all three of our children. She will also add in her own devotion time. There is also a Bible component to Notgrass which she will be using this year, I'll discuss that more below. (1 credit)
     Math - We have decided she will continue with No-Nonsense Algebra that we received just a few weeks ago as a review. She will also be using Life of Fred Algebra for 2 reasons. One you don't get the whole story of Fred until you reach Calculus ... and she REALLY wants to know the whole story. And two, my husband loves the theory and real life application that are in Fred's books so combined she will have a full, well-rounded Algebra course. Oh and my grandmother-in-law will also continue to teach her some Algebra concepts whenever they are together ... she was a math teacher for decades and the head of the math department at two different local high schools. (1 credit)
     English - Last year we searched high and low for a complete Grammar curriculum that both the girls could use. It's called Analytical Grammar and it's been really helpful filling in some gaps Arianna felt she had. However, it wasn't what Audrie liked as much as she thought it would be so we'll wait and use it maybe next year for her. We are also switching gears a little this year with Arianna and going with Notgrass' American History. This will cover literature and composition. (1 credit)
     History - Notgrass will be her main curriculum and she will have to answer questions, do readings, and there will be quizzes and tests ... something she hasn't really experienced up until now. She will also still be around when we are working on SOTW so I'm sure she'll still want to participate in the mapping and other activities we do. (1 credit)
     Science - She will also be doing Science in the Ancient World like her siblings. If we finish early we will go on to the next book Science in the Scientific Revolution. Both of these cover Middle Ages and then Early Renaissance so they will line up with History. Arianna is also being given the opportunity to take a college level Anatomy class (the plus side of having a grandmother who is a college professor and head of the department). It starts next week on Monday's ... only a one day a week class. Since next Monday is the Solar Eclipse she won't go to class, but she'll get the lesson this week. ;)  After that she'll take a few classes which will help her learn how to take notes and how a classroom works. She will also need to take the tests. If all goes well she will certainly get honors credit for this. (1 credit)
     Language - Arianna will be continuing in her lessons on French through Schoolhouse Teachers. She does this mainly on her own. Her dad took French when he was in high school so I make him check her pronunciation. But she seems to have an affluence to languages. She will also be doing Latinia Christiana with her sister - I will be instructing them for this.
~~~~~~~~~~
Art and Music will be done together as a family. We will continue with the art lessons from a review we had earlier this year as well as adding in some other artistic genres. I will also be pulling together some Middle Ages art to coincide with our history and Early Renaissance Art when we get there in history.  Music we will do the same and then I hope to be able to jump back in with my girls learning piano (from their cousin or my best friend if either have the time) and my son learning Violin (using another Schoolhouse Teachers curriculum. I might even take the Violin lessons with my son!

Now, as I have been this year, we will continue to weave our reviews (for the rest of the year) in and around our planned subjects and classical spine, sometimes having to forgo some while we focus on a particular review subject. But all in all the reviews we get are what we need at the time even without us knowing. Our Crew leader is always prayerfully preparing the way for each and every review and it does not go unnoticed. And if the Lord agrees we will continue with the Crew in the upcoming year as well.

This post has been LONG, but I hope I've given you a good glimpse into our curriculum choices for the day. Be sure to check in on all the others posting in the Blog Hop!
