Typing With Purpose - A New TOS Review!!

I remember learning how to type and loving being able to type on a typewriter.  Nowadays typewriters are a relic from the past, but the skill of learning how to type is still very important.  Almost every job in America uses some type of typing skills and the younger you learn the faster you will become.  So when I had the opportunity for Arianna to try her hand at beginning the journey of learning to type, I jumped aboard.

The Product:
PhotobucketPhotobucketThat's where Keyboarding for the Christian School comes in.  They have their new Revised Version (e-book $15.95), an Elementary Version ($12.95; which also comes in a large print version), Teacher Tools ($14.95), and even bundles to choose from (Keyboarding for Christian Schools Revised and Elementary Versions for just $22! and a Homeschool Teaching Package for $27!  So there has to be at least one (or more) that will fit your 'school' and children.  And if you order before August 29, 2012, you can use the code SUMMER2012 to get 20% off of your order!!

These are e-books so that your students will be able to get real life skills.  (You can also choose to order the books already printed - see the site for prices.)  Most of our typing is done from copying a piece of paper onto a computer.  So when your student learns only from typing what they see on a screen it's not as helpful in teaching the skills necessary when typing from another source (like a piece of paper on the side of your keyboard.)  With an e-book you can print just one page, print and bind the whole book; and even have it up on a tablet beside your computer - all of these options build the skills for 'real-life' typing.

Our Experience:
Arianna has been our student for this review, mainly because she uses the computer a bit more then Audrie and already has knowledge of where the keys are.  Audrie is using the program also, but at a much slower rate.  We have been using the Elementary Version which was designed for grades K - 5.

I have had Arianna work one to two lessons per week.  If she needs extra practice, then we might review some more that week.  I had downloaded the e-book to my Tablet and then opened up the corresponding lesson for the day.  Then on the computer I have an open blank word document page on which we put a heading.  Then she types the exercises she sees on the Tablet onto the document page.  Here are some pictures of her working at that.

Here are some samples on centering and enumerated lists.

My Thoughts:
I am glad to have this valuable resource.  I think in this time and age more students should be learning skills like typing.  Typing will be a skill that your students will use for a lifetime.  And what a better time then in the younger grades to learn.  If you have an older student, it is never too late to start typing.  These products are also a great economical value making learning how to type as easy as ever.  And because they are in an e-book format if your student needs more review, you can just print that page/lesson again.

I hope you take some time and read what other Crew members thought of Keyboarding for the Christian School - you can do that by clicking the link below.
