The Product:
The author, Debra Haegan, also a homeschooling mom, wrote this book to fill a need or a gap she saw while she was teaching her young ones. The gap - a book that would be able to teach the scientific concepts and theories behind Intelligent Design and Creation that corroborate the Bible. When she found that a book like this did not exist, she decided to write one created especially for the elementary children between Pre-K and 3rd grade.
The 24 page book can be purchased in paperback form at just $8.99 or as an e-book (PDF) for $7.99. After April 1st you will be able to find this book through other retailers.
Our Experience:
We were given a PDF e-book to review and I immediately downloaded it to my NEW Galaxy Tab! Then I gathered the kids all around as we read the book together. My children were mesmerized by the story as well as the cute drawings of all the wonderful animals. I wish my husband would have been home to take a picture of us, but alas he was not. :(
The book is about 2 children, John and Sarah, learn many things while visiting the zoo from both their parents and the zookeepers. They ask questions about why a giraffe's neck is so tall or why a zebra needs stripes and are answered with the term "design." As you read the book your child will know that everything that has been created has its very own specific design and purpose ...even them!
As soon as we were finished with the book, my son (3) asked if we could read it again. I take that as a HUGE compliment! There are not many books that he will #1 sit for all the way through the book and #2 ask for it to be repeated as soon as the book is over.
My girls (8, 6) also enjoyed the book. It is a regular request when asking if they can use MY tab. ;) Arianna (the older one) knew most of the facts about the more common animals discussed in the book, while Audrie was asking questions with each turn of the page. She knew about the animals, but not really why they were created the way they were.
My Thoughts:
I can't wait to read more of Debra's books and think that she has hit on a much needed niche in the reading world with Amazing Animals by Design. I LOVED that she not only used recognizable animals that we all know and love (like the giraffe and elephant) but also more unique and special animals (like the caracal and Barbary Sheep.)
I encourage you to read some other Crew reviews and see how their families reacted when reading this book. You are able to find Debra at the Amazing Animals by Design blog, on Facebook, her own review site - Noteable Scraps, or on her very own website!
