Ride the Coasters!

So this past week we started on an awesome unit study called Roller Coasters. Well, we've gotten a bit behind with not having a printer and all, but we are finishing the unit this week.

You might ask me, "What is a unit study?" and that is a great question. A unit study is a study focused on one particular subject (in this instance Roller Coasters) that incorporates many different facets. For instance, some of the subjects we conquered within this study included history, spelling, and physics. Yes, physics! You can teach physics to a kindergartner and a 2nd grader!

This is an overview of what we have covered:

Day 1: What Is a Roller Coaster?
Day 2: The History of Roller Coasters
Day 3: People and Places of Roller Coasters
Day 4: Science Secrets of Roller Coasters/Rides
Day 5: Goodies and Gadgets of Roller Coasters

Within these days are pages and pages of fun - from worksheets to definitions to watching You Tube videos. And let me tell you those videos were a hit! This is a picture of the girls and daddy on their very own roller coaster ride.

And here is a snippet into what happened on Day 3 of our study. After completing that day's study they went to their grandmother's house for the rest of the afternoon. While there I received a ton of picture text messages from her "showing me" what my girls were doing. They were 'dancing on a roller coaster'. The story goes that the Roller Coaster went through the bamboo forest and then proceeded to drop them off at the Pagoda Palace for their afternoon tea. Then the place dog 'ruined' their tea party.

As you can see this lesson has led to loads of imagination and physical activity. This story was put together by weaving facets they had learned with images they had seen within the You Tube videos.

Not only do these studies teach you things, you get to create things. Whether it be your own roller coaster, testing out experiments of gravity or inertia, or making your very own lapbook from the templates provided, you can create to your heart's content. The lapbook allows you to have a physical representation of your journey through these very informative units.

Now I know, you are asking yourselves, "How do I get one?" so let me tell you all about the nitty-gritty. The Download-N-Go's are just $7.95 each and they are designed for K-4 (however, I'm sure older ones would enjoy them too.) Go here to purchase the unit on Roller Coaster for yourself (or keep reading for your chance at winning it!) You can also get a free sample here (make sure you scroll down to - peek inside.) And if you decided to buy a bundle you get even more discounts.

Now for the Give Away! I have been given one copy of this study so that one lucky person can enjoy their own ride on the D-N-G Roller Coaster. To enter you MUST LEAVE A COMMENT telling me you would like to win. This giveaway will be open until August 22nd, so be sure to enter quickly and spread the word! A winner will be chosen randomly then from those that comment.

After seeing your girls having so much fun, I'm not sure why anyone would not want this.

I want one! If I win, I'm going to store this one away for my children.

Is that enough that I like??

My favorite, I think, would be Pizza Party. That one looks like a lot of fun, too.
