I Want to Be ...

This week's question:

What do your children want to be when they grow up and what are you doing to help them pursue their field of interest?

Well, today I decided to start with Audrie and then ask Arianna. Reason is that a lot of times I think Audrie just says whatever she just heard thinking and hoping it was the right answer.

Audrie:
God has to make that decision, not me. (Loved that and it was not prompted at all, I promise!) But I want to be everything ... a fireman, a teacher of ballet, a fixer of a house, a store shopper (I think that means a grocery shopper - so a mom?), a police, a real person (don't we all), and to be able to fix necklaces.

I also want to be able to get rings for all my children and have a million books (and a million dollars.)  Oh and one more thing ... a computer fixer.

Well, all I can say to that is I have my work cut out for me ... LOL!!  That a lot of "things to be" and a bit difficult to prepare for them all.  Since she is only five, I'm pretty sure some of these ideas will change over time, maybe even before next week.  For now, I will just let her pretend, act out and read lots and lots of books.

Arianna:
I want to be who writes a book.  Well, lots of books.  I want to write all different kinds of books -- about flowers, animals, people, history, mysteries, and science.  I want to write books because I love reading books and being around books.  I want to write about things nobody else knows.

I want to be a chef too.  A chef in a restaurant that cooks all different types of food like Chinese food (I love Chinese food), lemon cake, Spanish food and I'll write all my recipes down.

Originally, she wanted to just be a ballerina, but we have discussed this before and she knows that would just be a hobby or something for exercise, especially since she has never had a dance class.

This past fall we participated in NaNoWriMo where you write a book in one month.  She really enjoyed it.  I am sure we will be participating in that again this year.

We also go to the library quite often and have TONS of books around all the time.  So her love of reading is quite natural.  She excels in reading and reading comprehension.  Whenever she has an interest we find a book on it.  We have also begun official grammar to help explain how to build good, strong sentences ... sentences which build paragraphs ... paragraphs which build books.

Cooking has also been an influence from a young age.  All my children really enjoy watching Stephen or I cook meals.  Arianna also helps prepare simple cooking tasks (like get items out to make a sandwich or cook something in the microwave.)  When I bake cakes or cookies or pies she is right there willing to help.  Now that she is older I do let her get a bit more involved with the baking or cooking by adding in some of the ingredients, measuring things out, cracking eggs, and those sorts of things.

These interests are a little new to me, so now what we will do is start helping her meet her future goals.  This will be a fun new adventure for her and me.

Please make sure you read some of my other Crew member's children's answers too.  And see you next time on the Blog Cruise!

Sounds like Arianna likes diversity. Writing lots of different books and cooking lots of different foods :)

Like Audrie, I had to tell one of my kids to tell me what they think not say what they think I want to hear. There is no right or wrong answer in some cases :)

I love how kids want to be "everything." It's great you have this recorded to look back at some day in the future. (Stopping by as part of the TOS Crew Blog Walk.)
